The articulation between the articular surface of the PATELLA and the patellar surface of the FEMUR. The patellofemoral joint is a complex articulation with high functional and biomechanical requirements. Several anatomical variants of both patella and the trochlea exist. This joint has an inner (medial) and an outer (lateral) compartment. The kneecap and the femur form a third joint, called the patellofemoral joint. The knee joint is surrounded by a joint capsule with ligaments strapping the inside and outside of the joint (collateral ligaments) as well as crossing within the joint (cruciate ligaments). The femoropatellar joint compressive force for downhill walking is comparable to running, squatting or downstairs walking.

It's involved in climbing, walking on an incline, and several other knee movements.

Femoropatellar joint

The patellofemoral joint is a synovial joint between the condyles of the femur and the articular surface of the patella. It is part of the knee joint.

The lateral approach to the femoropatellar joint provided greater exposure of the lateral femoral trochlear ridge and articular surface of the patella. Surgery was performed on nine joints of seven clinical patients with osteochondritis dissecans. The craniolateral approach was used on four joints, and the lateral approach was used on five joints. Objective To validate the safety of a suprapatellar pouch (SPP), approach to the femoropatellar joint (FPJ), and describe use of a laparoscopic cannula to remove debris or loose bodies. Study Desig Reasons for performing study: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions of the femoropatellar (FP) joint are diagnosed routinely by radiography, but lesions located in the trochlear groove or without accompanying subchondral bone changes can be difficult to visualise.Ultrasonography allows evaluation of articular cartilage and subchondral bone in the FP joint. In 35 patients suffering from femoropatellar arthralgia, ultrasound of the cartilage at the femoral side of the FP joint and double contrast computed arthrotomography were obtained.

As a beginning, a number of subjects, clinically symptom-free, were selected for examination.
